Magic Realism and the Freudian Revolution

- Where in this text do you see the connections between what Freud says about human motivation and our dreams and the way Gabriel Garcia Marquez has chosen to write this text? Give specific examples including passages from the text.
- Find a piece of art which you feel represents a passage or portion of the text. Explain your choice. (Do not simply Google One Hundred Years of Solitude art, do a little more of an in-depth searching on your own.)
- Identify elements of the story that you find particularly confusing, interesting, or worthy of discussion. Pose your own questions and respond to those of others.
- You must post 2 times before next Tuesday, November 17th. The second time you post, it must be in response to or in reaction to the post of another student.
Due Date Correction: You need to have one post by this Thursday. A new post will go up this Friday (subsequent new posts will also be posted Friday). You must post twice each week, (before Thursday). The first should be an original response to one of the questions I've posted, the second should be in response to or in reaction to the post of another student.
ReplyDeleteThis book is written like the whole thing is a dream. the stuff that happens in it seems like it could only happen in a dream not in real life. Especial how no body has died or gets sick except for the insomnia. it is a weird book that doesn't make sense unless it is a dream.

I think that the insomnia plague that affects Macondo is confusing and worthy of discussion. The fact that it spreads like a communicable disease is very strange. Why/how did that happen? What was Marquez's motivation for making the disease contagious? What was the liquid that cured the disease? I think that the insomnia may be a symbol or representative of something, but I haven't figured out what.
ReplyDeleteGoing in to this book being quite skeptical, it surprisingly a decent book. Somethings about the book I often wonder how the author came up with. I understand that some of the characters are based off his family members or people he knew, but how did the people that are in the book effect the way that he grew up? What made him pick those specific people? and If one of us to write a book similar to Marquez's book who would be the people that you would choose to portray and what events would each character be a part of?
ReplyDeleteBut overall this book is quite interesting and I am excited to see what other crazy events that take place!

ReplyDeleteThis painting reminds me of the part in the book when he is trying too find the town of new inventions. It looks like the people in this picture are trying to be resourceful with very few materials. Also, just the way that the trees hang and how it is kind of swamp looking reminds me of their town.
The thing that confuses me most about this book is that I can never pinpoint where exactly in the world it takes place. I know that it is fiction but it is supposed to be based around real life and the author never comes out and says where the city of Macondo is exactly. All we know is that it is by a swamp, some mountains, and a wrecked galleon.
ReplyDeletei find it ironic that te family will marry itself and not accept others than what they know into their world. pierto crespi was a man who knew alot and worked hard for free. why wouldnt ursula let them be alone with the girls? he obviously would be a better choice for the girls than the boys in mocondo.

ReplyDeleteThis picture reminds of the cock fights in the book. I think it is silly how the two men react to it. They really get into it. Then the one dude get killed over it because he makes fun of the other guys man area. Everything that happened because of a cockfight was unnecessary. The loser should had accepted the loss and the winner should had won and moved on. There isn’t much to brag over a bird fight. I don’t get why the author put this into the book? Maybe it was just to make it longer and more confusing that it already is?
In reply to Mike: I think Macondo is somewhere in Mexico. I seems to fit all the qualifications. Also the names seem like they come from a very Mexican heritage. So yes...somewhere in Mexico sound good…yes?
ReplyDeleteAddition to before how can people never sleep when they had the insonmia. how know one dies in it at all. the whole thing is one big dream
ReplyDeleteIn response to David's first post:
ReplyDeleteI think the author put in the story of the cockfight to explain why the Buendias fled their old village for Macondo. He killed somebody because he was insulted by somebody he just beat in a cockfight. The cock fight was essential for the story's plot. Sure the author could have used some other scenario, maybe he really likes chicken.

ReplyDeletei picked this picture to show the passage in the book when the gypsies came and they said it was like a gypsy fair. This picture makes me think of that because it looks like everyone is sitting around in awe looking at new things they have never seen before. And that is exactly what they did in the book at the gypsy fair.
in reponse to carlee:
ReplyDeletei think your picture fits Macondo well. But do they actually live with like gross swampy water everywhere? or are there just a bunch of swamps around them? This makes me wonder what there house look like, are they in neighborhoods or just randomly placed? All i can picture is the house the family rebuilt.

ReplyDeletei think your picture of the gypsy fair is very realistic.i had doubts about it but it matches my thoughts of the gypsy fair well. it depicts Macondo as a dark place with a lot of people when it is very busy but i think that the picture is limited and does not have the full feel Macondo ,i think, has.
it seems to me that this guy like woke up one morning from a weird dream and was like hey im going to write a book because all of the names are messed up and confusing and clearly none of it is reall like the guy floating from chocolate. That dosent happen. You also can not spread that one desease were you cant sleep its a disorder not a contadious disease.
ReplyDeletein response to mike
ReplyDeletei totaly get what you mean i also think that he like chickens because he put them in his book. And i think that the plot is desided by that tool.
